Basketball Recruiting: The Family Process
The recruiting process can be very overwhelming to some families and student-athletes. With a few simple things, you can take control of the process, have it work for you and not be so stressful.
Our seminar was designed for parents of all age student-athletes to engage in an informal informational session about the experience of the college recruitment process, both from the viewpoint of the family involved and that of the college coach.
To help families and their scholastic and AAU coaches figure out..."What is really going on?"
The unfortunate reality is that there is a "Cat & Mouse" game that happens on both sides. We can change that. The college coaches involved in recruiting cannot objectively give you the guidance you are looking for. They have too much invested in signing prospects.
Prospective student-athletes don't want to tell college coaches they aren't interested because they aren't sure if they will end up with the scholarship offers they want in the end. College coaches don't want to tell families that their child isn't their "number 1 choice in fear that they will choose another school before they are ready to "offer." Each side becomes less comfortable. Skeptical. It's OK. As a prospect, keep focused on the process and what is important to you and your family.
Most parents and families are unsure of the questions to ask college coaches, or even if it is "OK" to ask college coaches questions. It is. Ask as many questions as you can. If you don't get the answer you understand - ask again. Most college coaches want those questions.
Questions and the answers to questions help everyone figure out if a particular school is the right fit. That is your goal, the right fit... not to play for the highest ranked team or in the highest ranked conference. Be realistic. Keep what makes you happy and is important as the priority.

Learning to Jump Higher for Basketball - A Jump Manual Review
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
The Jump Manual is a classic program for increasing an athlete's vertical leap. I have no doubt that anyone who purchases the Jump Manual will find exactly what they are looking for inside.
It is utterly comprehensive and covers every aspect of learning to jump higher conceivable: the top 15 exercises for higher jumps, a detailed analysis of each phase for jumping, several scarcely known secret "tricks of the trade" that can have you jumping higher in minutes (literally), a highly developed and cohesive training program to get you jumping higher as fast as possible, and more.
The completeness of the Jump Manual is what really makes it stand apart. Not only is the information coming from over ten years of experience as a vertical jump and quickness trainer, but it is laid out in an extremely easy and simple format-easy to read and apply, yet with enough in it to keep you coming back for more. Many other programs focus on just one training method, but this results in them missing out on the enormous benefits that can be reached by using a multi-faceted training approach.
Users of the jump manual receive:
-Complete workout chart detailing everything you need to know to get the results you want
-Complete training video library showing you how to do every exercise and stretch
-Exact nutrition plan showing you exactly what you can eat to improve muscle gains and decrease injury
-One-on-one training with the author of the Jump Manual, Jacob Hiller
-Weight room alternatives so you can do the exercises even without a weight room
-Access to the in-depth members area training forum
-Interviews with NBA coaches, shooting coaches, professional athletes and more
-How to make a portable nutrition center
-Glossary of training vocabulary
-Complete section on how form enhancements can get you immediate gains And much more all in easy-to-use, readily available software. The only disclaimer to this program: you will have to work hard and do the program. You will not improve if you do not do the exercises, but if you do them, you will see huge improvements in your vertical leap. My advice: if you're serious about jumping higher and improving your game, if you've always wanted to dunk but never quite been able to make it-this is the program to get.

Beginners Basketball Tips for Everyone
The game of basketball is perhaps one of the most popular sports in the world today. It has a huge following around globe and is enjoyed by both male and female players and fans alike.
The first thing beginners need to know about the game is that organized basketball is a team sport wherein two squads field five players each at a time and compete against an opposing team for 48 minutes which are divided into four 12-minute quarters.
In order to win, players must score the basketball by dropping it into their assigned basket. The group that has possession of the ball and is trying to score is often referred to as the offensive team while the opposing team is called the defensive team because their objective is to stop the offensive team from making baskets and gain possession of the ball.
Once the offensive team successfully scores a field goal, the two squads exchange roles and it becomes the defensive team's turn to go on offense and attempt to score the basketball.
There are two hoops strategically located on both ends of the 94-feet playing court and teams are to switch baskets at the start of the third quarter. The squad which scores more points collectively at the end of the match wins the game.
There are three important skills that every player must be able to perform in order to become effective basketball players; they must be able to dribble, pass and shoot.
Dribbling is the act of pounding the ball up and down repeatedly without ever stopping to carry it. It is perhaps the most basic basketball move as it is the primary method players are allowed to use to traverse the playing court with the ball. The rules state that all active players are not allowed to walk while carrying the ball, which is why dribbling is so important.
Every team member must familiarize himself with this skill and perfecting it can only be achieved through practicing regularly. Beginners should train themselves to dribble without looking at the basketball as well as while moving and most especially running as these are essential in developing a good basketball mindset.
Secondly, players should know how to pass the ball. This is the easiest concept to grasp as all a person needs to do is to throw the ball towards a teammate. A pass can be done with either hand or even both. A player can throw a pass in so many ways and they are allowed to do it even in motion.
While it may sound simple, passing is a skill that should not be taken lightly. Good basketball players should be able to pass the ball to their teammates with pinpoint accuracy. They should also know when and when not to pass the basketball because opposing players are allowed to intercept or "steal" the ball away from an offensive player at any given time on the playing court.
Last but not the least is the art of shooting the basketball. Shooting the ball means attempting to score and as you may already know, scoring leads to winning. Players can score in a variety of ways but the rules say that the ball must successfully drop through the hoop to count.
Regular field goals count as two points while shots taken from beyond the three-point line located farther away from the basket will count as three points.
The proper way to shoot the basketball is by raising and placing it in front of you. Using your primary or more dominant hand, fling the ball up in the air towards the hoop in an attempt to make it drop in while using your other hand to simply guide the ball or keep it steady as you shoot.
Master these fundamentals and keep playing with different kinds of people to gain more experience. Work hard on perfecting these skills and you will definitely become a great basketball player someday.

Basketball Plays - Out-Of-Bounds Plays for Successful Recovery
Having specific out-of-bounds plays established is a crucial component in preparing for, and winning, basketball games. Basketball practice is important not only for developing skills and techniques, but also for preparing players for situations they will encounter during games. A team that knows what to do in any situation will be more confident and successful on the court. The following two basketball plays were designed to give players an edge when bringing a ball in from out-of-bounds.
Box Play
The first out-of-bounds basketball play players should learn utilizes a box formation. Four offensive players form a box around the lane, with two players in the high post and two in the low post. The fifth player is out-of-bounds, just to the side of the backboard. This player can move behind the endline, but not the sidelines, of the court. He cannot step onto the court until after he passes the ball.
In the box formation, the player closest to the ball will slide to the basket. The player opposite him will then move from the weak side to the strong side of the court, staying in a low post position. The player in the high post strong side position moves to the sideline and then cuts toward the ball. Finally, the high post weak side player also cuts to the strong side sideline and then moves back toward the midcourt.
As the players move toward the ball and then fake away, the out-of-bounds player watches for an opening to pass. He should first look to the players closest to the basket, then the high post players, starting with the strong side and then the weak side.
Line Play
The next out-of-bounds basketball play for teams to practice uses a line formation. The four offensive players form a line on the strong side of the lane. Again, the fifth player is out-of-bounds with the ball.
The play begins with the player closest to the endline sliding toward the basket. The second player in line will then cut to the near corner of the court. The third player cuts straight forward in the line, and the last player serves as an outlet by moving toward the near sideline, back and diagonally. Like in the box play, the out-of-bounds player will look for an open player to pass to, starting near the basket and working his way out and away from the basket.
These basketball plays provide a guide for recovering an out-of-bounds ball, and they can be adapted to meet the needs of any particular team or scenario. Players who are physically and mentally prepared for the game will have a winning advantage on the court.

How To Choose The Correct Bowling Equipment
You don't need much equipment to go bowling, but it is important that the equipment you have is the correct fit and size for you. You need the right kind of shoes and a bowling ball - that's it! You might want to wear a pair of fingerless gloves to help you grip, but these are optional.
Bowling shoes have a special smooth sole which slide across the floor. You can hire these from the bowling center, or if you want to take your bowling more seriously, you can buy your own pair. You should never wear your bowling shoes outside - the slippery sole will make them dangerous to walk in, and the rubbing on the soles from the street will ruin the smoothness needed for bowling.
The other essential piece of equipment needed is a bowling ball. You can choose these by size and weight. As a rough guide, you should choose a ball which is about a third of your body weight, but this doesn't always work. Try the different sizes and weights of house balls before you decide to purchase your own ball. When you're playing, check to see if the ball speed decreases towards the end of your game - if this is the case, then the ball is probably too heavy for you. If you're not sure, check your score - a general rule is that the lower your score, the lower the ball speed.
Another way to try a ball is to put your fingers in the holes and swing the bowling ball. If you're struggling to keep your shoulder up on the back swing, then the ball may be too heavy for you. If the ball leaves the ground and is in the air when you roll it, then it's probably too light for you. A rough guide is that adult males should be able to handle fourteen to sixteen pound balls without difficulty; adult females might prefer balls ranging from ten to fourteen pounds - these may suit teenage boys as well.
It's also important that you check how the ball fits your fingers. You need to put two fingers and your thumb into the finger holes. You should be able to put your entire thumb in without difficulty, and your fingers need to go in as far as the first joint, or just between the first and second joints. Make sure your fingers aren't tight in the holes - you need to be able to move your fingers easily out and in. Your hand should be stretched, but not to the point of discomfort. Some bowling balls are designed to be held by only the fingertips - so the holes in this type of bowling ball aren't as deep.
If you have your own bowling equipment, you'll need to buy bags for the ball and shoes. You will find that a small towel is useful to clean any dirt off the ball during and after your game is useful. If you play regularly, you might find that a rosin bag is useful for keeping your hands dry.

Best Bowling Balls
You may have a great degree of natural talent, but you still need to have the right equipment to truly step your level of play up. The latest line of bowling balls makes it easier than ever to improve your play and perform like a true champion. And what comes as even better news is that this line of balls provides enough individual variety to grant any bowler a perfect match.
One of the simplest yet most important features to look for is the finish of the ball. While you might assume that this finish is universal among balls, it's actually not. Chances are you will want to look for balls that feature a finished and polished surface. These provide a smooth delivery and are key to getting as many strikes as possible. Having noted that, however, you may wish to look for an unpolished or unfinished ball if you have someone you know who can take care of the finishing and polishing for you. These unfinished and unpolished balls are usually cheaper so they are often chose on price alone.
Another very important factor to look for when you're considering your next purchase is the hook potential of the ball. The hook potential scale ranges from zero to sixty, with sixty being the highest degree of hook potential. For example, if you have a severe hook then you will want to look into lower hook potential balls. Conversely, if you would like to add some hook to your shot then you would probably do better with a higher hook potential ball. If you haven't previously purchased a ball then it may prove beneficial to rent a few different balls first and see how the different hook potentials respond to your typical bowling technique.
You will also notice that bowling balls are also rated for the types of lanes they are to be used on. Lane conditions are usually rated from dry to medium to high. If you are not sure of the lane conditions where you usually bowl then don't hesitate to call up that bowling alley and make an inquiry. This will help to insure you get the best bowl for the conditions you most frequently bowl on.
There are also plenty of specialty balls that can add some real flair to your bowling technique. For example, there are a few different models that feature internal technology that creates an awesome backend move for improved control and precision.

Bowling Games To Play With Children
Some of the most enjoyable games that you can play with children are skittle or bowling games. These games work for youth ministry groups, scouting group, holiday clubs, at school, at birthday parties, for your kids and their friends or even with adults. These games are mainly designed to work indoors, but you may be able to adapt them for outdoor play. I will tell you the rules for playing in teams, but it can be played as individuals if you have a smaller group. Equipment needed: bowling pins, lightweight balls or bean bags, tape or string to mark the playing area, pen and paper for scoring and a set of playing cards to divide the children in to two even teams. Note that plastic drinking bottles can be used as a substitute for bowling pins. Try to match up the players according to their ability and don't be afraid to make changes if necessary. The games can be more fun if prizes are at stake, but try to give some sort of consolation prize to the losing team if you decide to do this. Above all, have fun!
SKITTLE ATTACK
Place between 10 and 20 skittles at both ends of the room and mark the playing area at the halfway point using tape, string etc. The number of skittles you use depends on the size of the room and how many player you have. You need to decide how many players you can call out in to the middle for each round; I would use two or three, but one or four is also possible. Place 1 ball for each player in their defending half and then call out the participating players numbers or names. The kids will try to knock down as many bowling pins in the opposite half as they are able to while defending their own pins. Play for 1 to 2 minutes each round and then score one point for each pin knocked over.
DOWN WITH THE PIN
For this game I like to use three teams, but it can be played with two teams. Place 1 pin for each team at the end of one side of the room - the three teams will sit around the remaining sides. Mark a throwing line around 10 to 14 paces from each skittle and place 1 ball per team on this line. One player will stand or crouch behind their team's skittle and give back the ball back to the thrower when they miss the target. Call out a number and the children should race to their ball and quickly aim at the pin. The first player to knock down the skittle wins a point for their team. Change the person returning the balls after all the other player have had one turn.
QUICK ON THE DRAW
As per skittle attack, we need two even team sitting on each side of the room and a line marked halfway across the playing area. You need to place 2 pins at each end of the room, this should stand an equal distance from the line you have just marked out. Don't use 1 skittle as a player could stand in front of it and therefore making it impossible to knock down the target. This is a one-on-one game and the aim is to be the first person to knock over the skittle. But the players have only 1 ball each and if you miss your opponent will have more time to make the strike. Obviously, the players are only allowed in their own half of the playing area, but you can defend your own pin. This is a fast and furious game and you should be able to get in a lot of turns in a short space of time.

Below are some tips to improve bowling for you...
1. You need to keep your ball arm freely swinging. It needs to swing like a pendulum does. If you tense up your release of the ball will be forced and it may make the ball veer off target.
2. Have a relaxed grip on the ball. Don't squeeze your fingers and thumb hard on the sides of the holes. If you have to do this to hold on to the ball the holes are too big and you should find one that fits your hand better. Just like you swing being loose helps your release so does having a light grip on the ball.
3. Your lower body is just as important to bowling as your upper body. You have to be balanced and end your approach on the same foot as the arm you are throwing the ball with. The opposite leg in bent and slightly behind your ending slide leg.
4. Finish all the way through after you release the ball. Don't just stop your hand at point of release. It will not give you as smooth of a release and your shot will not be as successful.
Use the 4 above tips along with others to improve your bowling game. Remember as with any sport practice helps make you a better player. Bowling is a fun social sport but can also be done professionally.

The Art Of Swimming
Anthropologists say that man evolved out of the sea and it is certainly a fact that our prehistoric ancestors swam according to interpretations of cave drawings in Sura, Egypt. However, the earliest written references to swimming are from about 2000 BC, but people should have been bathing, swimming and fishing long before that.
Swimming competitions began in Europe around the turn of the Nineteenth Century, but there are certain to have been swimming competitions long before that in Europe and in other continents around the world. John Arthur Trudgen made the front crawl well-known in 1873, although it is likely that this style was being used in other parts of the globe.
Until 1873, the breast stroke was the preferred style of swimming in Europe and America. The crawl, which was first called the Trudgen, became an Olympic sport in 1896, the first of the modern Olympics, which were held in Athens. The butterfly stroke was introduced in 1952, before which it was thought of as a variation of the breast stroke.
The vast bulk of our bodies is made up of water and there is a lot of oil as well. This means that the body is less dense than water, which also means that the human body floats under normal circumstances. So, the body will float in fresh and salt water at or 50%-ish below the surface.
You can rise above this level by paddling water downwards, which will push the body up or you can move forwards by pushing water behind you. A combination of both of these actions will propel a swimmer forward at or above the surface of the surrounding water.
It is easier to swim in salt water than fresh water, because the salt makes the water denser which has the effect that your body will float higher in it. Good swimmers or rather fast swimmers have flexible hips.
Swinging from one arm to another in the crawl, which is the fastest stroke, depends on hip action not on substantial arm muscles. After all, the amount of water that you can move with your hands is not that heavy.
Thigh muscles are significant for a continuous, rhythmic beat and co-ordination is just as important. There are different styles of swimming the crawl, some swimmers prefer to draw the water back with cupped hands, others with flat hands and yet others with fingers slightly spread.
Breathing is vital for any form of continuous exertion. It is better to control the breathing so that you breathe in on one stroke, hold it for a stroke and breathe out during the next two strokes. This means that you just have to lift your mouth out of the water each four strokes.
Swimming is an excellent exercise because it exerts many muscles at the same time, but does not put pressure on hip, knee or ankle joints. It also increases the amount of oxygen in the blood., as do most exercises, but swimming encourages the partaker to hold in breath which means that the swimmer gets all the benefits from that air.

What's The Best Temperature For Your Swimming Pool Water?
Do you like your swimming pool to feel like sauna or would you prefer to jump in and have your breath taken away by the chill? What's the ideal temperature for a swimming pool? Is there an ideal one or is it personal preference? The answer is, both.
Competitive swimmers tend to be comfortable in water with temperatures that hover between 78-82 degrees but even with that said, that could be either too cool - or too hot, depending on the individual.
For your family's backyard pool, if you don't have a heater, the question is moot. If you do have a pool heater it may be a bit of an adjustment time to see what temperature your family can agree on. There are a couple of factors to take into consideration before you decide to crank up the heater.
Keep in mind that if you raise the temperature it can effect your pool maintenance schedule. At higher temperatures evaporation increases which means you can have a quicker build up of dissolved solids. A higher temp can also burn off your sanitizer more quickly and bacteria and algae grow at faster rates in higher temperatures. Also, because of the heat, scale forms in the water because of the "saturation index." And bottom line, if you are using your pool for exercise, it can tire you out and may not be as comfortable as water that is a bit lower in temp.
Whether you heat your pool with a solar cover or a heater, seasonal weather changes will also affect the pool water and you might need to adjust the water's alkalinity to compensate for changes in the saturation index.

Learn to Swim - Kickboard
During one of my swimming lessons, I ask one of my students about his kickboard. So what is so special about his kickboard? It is soft, flexible. Without using much of my strength, I can easily bend the kickboard into half. The kickboard has cartoons imprinted on it which it make unique among the peers. I ask the student why you get this kickboard. He mentioned it is purely for his swim lesson and he find it attractive and he asks his parents to purchase it. Upon hearing this, I am on my edge of bewilderment. To my opinion, this kickboard does not serve any purpose except it is unique in the design. To a young beginner in swimming, I believe the kickboard should have the following characteristic.
Solid and Rigid
The kickboard must in a solid form as young beginner is tense in learning swimming. During water confidence activities, I have seen my students who are semi water confident holds their kickboard so tightly that the shape of the kickboard is twisted. Even though, the water activities are conducted at sixty centimeters height, the students have a fear of the pool depth. Imagine a flexible kickboard which the young beginner is holding, the kickboard will be folded during the lesson which may lead the beginners to drop their board easily. The kickboard may be deformed by the end of the lesson. With a solid kickboard, it tends to give the beginners a sense of sturdy feeling thus giving them the confidence of completing their water games.
Normal Rectangle Shape
Personally, I have seen a few design shape of the kickboard. Based on experience, I prefer my students to use the normal rectangle shape which they can be found commonly around swimming complex stores. Rectangle shape has a bigger surface area than other unique design such as fish shape, triangle shape, thus new beginners tend to feel more comfortable holding it. Regarding the triangle shape, I usually ask my students to use it at a later stage where they have achieved a level of competency. I feel that the triangle shape gives less buoyancy and less area for the students to hold so it will directly affect their confidence.
A kickboard is an essential aid for beginners to start their swimming adventures. Even though, students may like the design of the kickboard, it will be important to consider the quality of the kickboard. Personally, I have seen a few design of the kickboard that fulfill my criteria for beginners.
Solid and Rigid
The kickboard must in a solid form as young beginner is tense in learning swimming. During water confidence activities, I have seen my students who are semi water confident holds their kickboard so tightly that the shape of the kickboard is twisted. The Benefits of Learning to Swim
Why Every Child Needs To Know How To Swim
When people get older they don't think about taking lessons to learn how to swim, if they don't already know, because it might seem embarrassing, but it shouldn't, everybody needs to know how to swim. Water safety is taught at a very early age because kids are taking in information at a faster rate. Learning about how to swim and what it takes to be a good swimmer is very important. There are many ways to teach your child how to swim if you have a pool, and since you can teach them at a pace that will help them enjoy the process its much more fun. Having a healthy understanding of water is important when you are learning how to swim.
There are many devices you can use to help teach a person how to swim. Since swimming is learning how to stay afloat you can use arm floaters, they work best for small children and even life jackets can help them keep their heads above water. Once they learn how to kick their legs and move around the pool they will have the basic understanding of swimming. Many kids who are involved with school will be invited to swim parties or find themselves with summers that involve pool activities. Learning how to swim can be the difference between a vacation and one they will never forget.
The best way to teach somebody how to swim is to get them comfortable with water. Kids may have a fear of water because many times they cannot touch and that creates fear. Allow them to submerge so they can feel what its like to float and how they can keep themselves afloat. Children and adults can minimize that fear by becoming comfortable with the water level, this helps to gain confidence to venture into the deeper part of a pool. Flotation devises can be worn for any age; it helps a person stay above the water surface so they stay in control while swimming. To help minimize irritation to their eyes you can have them wear swim goggles. Swim caps can be used to keep their heads warm since some swimming pools are cool when you first enter them.
Learning how to swim in a pool is ideal because they can see the bottom of the pool and many pools are marked with depth indicators. Kiddie pools are often separate from larger pools so that kids can learn how to swim without worrying about older kids or adults. A child will let you know when they are ready to remove their flotation devices. It will be just as scary for you when they do. If you are going to teach a child how to swim in a public pool make sure that a life guard is on duty. They can help with tips about water safety and will even help to keep an eye on your little ones who are learning.
Eventually somebody will always find themselves around water. Since it covers most of the earth the chances of getting in water are very high. For those who learn how to swim at an early age it is much easier to adapt to larger bodies of water such as a lake or ocean. After learning how to swim efficiently a person should also learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) so they can help other people around water. Learning how to swim can open up a new world. There are swim teams you can join and after watching the previous Olympics where Michael Phelps won eight gold medals for swimming there has been a rise in the sports popularity. Swimming is also a relaxing activity, most people who go on vacation head to someplace that has water. Hotels have swimming pools so learning how to swim will help you to have a more enjoyable time on vacation.
Whenever somebody does participate in water sports such as water skiing or riding on a watercraft many safety measures are taken. Life jackets are always worn and safety protocol is practiced. Since swimming has always been considered a past time during summer everybody should learn how to swim. When learning how to swim there is a trust factor involved for each person learning. If you do take swim lessons make sure the instructor is qualified and that you enjoy learning from them.
Swimming is one of the best exercises; it requires you to use your arms to pull you along the water. You have to learn correct breathing and water aerobics are a great way to strengthen your whole body. Swimming is considered an aquatic sport and even if you never do compete in a race its still fun to get in the pool and cool off on a hot day. Those who do learn how to swim at a later age can still learn how to enjoy themselves while experiencing a new world under water.
Pool safety is very important if you own an outdoor pool. There are responsibilities for pool owners and those who operate a swimming pool. Since swimming is not a natural act for everybody those that need to learn should. Allowing a person to learn how to swim will give them confidence around water and give them a part of life that many people enjoy all year round. Swimming is fun and enjoyable if you know how, it gives you fun opportunities beyond the swimming pool.

The service courts are scored by a line in the center which divides the court's width. The short service line is the Non Volley Zone and usually marked as seven feet (7 ft). During doubles play, the court is as well marked by a long service line measuring two feet and six inches (2'6" ft) from the back margin. The net is usually five feet and an inch (5'1" ft) at the edges and in the center it is five feet (5 ft) high. The net posts however are positioned over the doubles sidelines, even when singles game is at play. Badminton History and Tradition
Badminton was invented in ancient Greece and Egypt as a form of sport. Badminton was originally a child' game and was initially called "battledore" or "shuttlecock." Originally Badminton was played with a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets. During the 18th century in India, Badminton was called "poona." British army officers who were stationed in India during this time brought this version of Poona back to England during the 1860's. Once it was back in England it spread slowly as the army met would introduce the sport to friends. It wasn't until a famous party in 1837 that the game really got going. The Duke of Beaufort had a party at his country place where the sport was played. The name of the country place was "Badminton in Gloucestershire. At the time of this party, the game had no name, and so it was simply referred to as "The Game Of Badminton." That's how the game got it's official name!
Now that the game had a name, it spread quickly from England to the United States, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. Despite its "male" beginnings, the sport is now pretty evenly divided with about the same number of women playing the sport as men.
In 1899 the first All England championship for men was held and the first tournament for woman was organized in 1900. For some reason or the other, these two tournaments were deemed to be unofficial, and it wasn't until 1904 that the "official" beginning of the All England matches started. In 1920 there were only about 300 badminton clubs in all of England, but by 1920 there were 500, and amazingly, only 10 years later, there were over 9,000 in the British Isles after World War II.
The International Badminton Federation was organized in 1934 with 9 initial members - Canada, England, Netherlands, Denmark, France, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and New Zealand. It wasn't until 1981 that this organization because the sports only international governing body. The International Badminton Federation, in 1939, decided it was time for International competitions, and the IB president at the time, Sir George A. Thomas, Baronet offered a trophy to the winning team. Ironically shuttlecosk shortages during the war and post-war caused a delay in the first "Thomas Cup" games until the 1948-1949 season. Someone tried to introduce an international women's team around the same time, but ultimately it wasn't acted upon due to financial difficulties. Eventually, during the 1956-1957 season, the "Uber Cup" was held. The Uber Cup was a women's international triennial tournament where the trophy was donated by Mrs. H.S. Uber of England. In 1992 Badminton was first contested as an official Olympic sport in Barcelona, Spain. There are now several world Badminton events including the Uber Cup, World Championships, World Juniors, Sudirman Cup, the World Cup, and the World Grand Prix Finals.
The game of Badminton today resembles tennis and volleyball and involves the use of a net, a shuttlecock and lightweight rackets. The shuttlecock is typically a cork ball fitted with feathers for stabilization. It's played with either two or four players and is played indoors or outdoors on a marked court about 44 feet by 17 feet wide for two players and 20 feet wide for 2 players. The official measurements for the net are that the top edge of the net should be 5 feet 1 inch from the ground at the posts and 5 feet from the ground at the center. During Badminton play, only the serving side can win a point. If the side serving the shuttlecock fails to return they lose the serve and if the side receiving fails to return, they lose the point and they will receive again. A Badminton game is played to 15 points, except in women's singles, which is played to 11 points. If the score is tied toward the end of a game, it can be decided through a procedure called setting. Setting is a tie breaking procedure which involves different procedures depending on the point at which the score is tied and the rules may be different for men and women's competition.
Badminton has a rich and interesting history, and it's popularity is always increasing with the availability of inexpensive equipment and places to play, almost anyone can enjoy the sport of Badminton. New competitions are being planned including the development of a SuperSeries and some one-off "Spectaculars." Searching on YouTube for badminton yields all sorts of interesting videos and match play and exhibition games.
